The Water Prince

The Water Prince

The music theatre production has been realized on commission of Stichting Groene Hart.

The inspiration for the project comes from their theme of the year : Waterlinie, the waterline.

The Hollandic Water Line proved its value less than forty years after its construction during the Franco-Dutch War (or Third Anglo-Dutch War) (1672), when it stopped the armies of Louis XIV from conquering the Dutch Republic, although the freezing over of the line came close to rendering it useless…..The French almost managed to break through in winter when the Waterline froze, but thaw prevented a further breakthrough

From this inspiring subject, we want to tell the story of an imaginary character, forced by fate (or maybe unconsciously by his own restless soul) to initiate a journey sailing the waters of the Waterlinie in the Rampjaar 1672.

We will follow him sailing those safe waters, and then when winter comes, walking on the frozen path, dangerous and life saving at the same time.

A journey which will take him to touch some of the places/towns/cities along the Waterlinie and meet there a extraordinary array of characters residents of the places: the funny Italian barber, a passionate french soldier who arrived there much before the war broke off, a beautiful woman, the love of his life, a dronken cheese trader, gypsies and jogglers, his unknown family.

We will watch him, while the show unfolds, making his way along the Waterlinie up to Muiden and the open see.

It will be there, that his journey will end with a surprise, that will affect him and will leave a legacy for years to come.

This imaginary journey is an ode to the human spirit and its conquest, its perseverance and its capacity to endure hardship for a greater good.

Vibrant, emotional, funny and sentimental at the same time….in perfect melodrama style.

Things I never told you

Things I never told you

“…memory is fragile and the space of a single life is brief, passing so quickly that we never get a chance to see the relationship between events; we cannot gauge the consequences of our acts, and we believe in the fiction of past, present, and future, but it may also be true that everything happens simultaneously.” (Isabelle Allende)

“Things I never told you” is a show, written, directed and performed by Carla Regina, with musicians Emanuele Modugno (piano) and Roberto Lisi (guitar). The show which premiered on March the 13th 2012 in Bitonto Italy and was sponsored by local institutions and by the Dutch National Broadcaster NTR, as part of the episode about Carla Regina of the program “Het beloofde land” which aired on April the 26th 2012 on Nederland 2. The tv program was the occasion to turn the show in an open fundraising to support the project “Maternita`Lia Speranza”, runned by SMA (African mission`s Society). The African mission’s Society operates for many years in Africa. The goal is to raise money to buld a clinic for pregnant women with a full equipped delivery room, in the province of Nambuangongo, Angola. The clinic is named after and dedicated to the memory of the late Lia Speranza, friend and supporter of SMA, philantropist and activist for the poor and the destitute all over the world. The show deals with the issue of living in the moment, in an autobiographical narrative in balance between irony and nostalgia, regret and passion, a past not really past and a future which is already here. The versatility of Carla Regina, which sings opera, jazz, and folk with the same intensity and passion, her candid and open narrative, connects immediately with the audience, which identifies and feels her life like it belongs to each and every one of them.

Carla Regina and pianist Emanuele Modugno allow the audience to meet the character of a woman (fiction or reality? They let the audience decide…), who is a warrior and general of an army that fights in the name of love.

In a series of short stories and anecdotes, this woman, strong and fragile, who stumbles and falls and stands up again, extraordinary in her ordinary life, comes to life, leaving the audience with the feeling that they too are and can be a part of this army, touched as they have been by her life.

The fascinating narrative is entwined with a musical repertoire which brings together, as common in the work of Carla Regina, different styles and genres (from Schubert to Neapolitan songs).
